Teachers hate cellphones. They can make students lose attention
in studying; also they can hurt a student’s grade. Yet, cellphones could help
students to promote a good grade. For example, students can use cellphones to
solve a question, so students do not need to disturb the teacher when lecturing.
Also, cellphone is a good tool for students to use. They can recall videos in the class, use a dictionary, and use a cellphone to take notes.
Nobody has 100% energy in the morning, especially for a student with a morning class. He or she will lose attention easily at some point in class. So they will miss some important material, and when a student goes back home, they will not understand what they studied about that day. Yet, if a student has a cellphone and recalls that class lesson, they can go back home to listen again to the material and see which part they are missing. For example, when a teacher tells students they will have a test tomorrow, students can go back home to watch the video, so they can have a good review, and they will not worry about if the test is difficult or not. Moreover, if some students are missing a class, they can tell somebody to recall the video and send to them to study. So they will not get left behind another student or get a bad grade on the next test.
Textbooks always have a lot of difficult vocabularies. When students read it, they do not understand what this word about, and students do not have a dictionary with them all the
time. Yet, cellphones could help students to solve this problem. For example, when a student is reading a biotech textbook, and they have one word which they do not understand, they can just use a cellphone dictionary to check the word; they do not need to disturb the teacher in the middle of the lecture. Also, a cellphone dictionary takes less time to check words than the paper dictionary, and it gives students more information than the paper one.
Taking notes in the class is always painful, because talking always goes faster than writing. Students cannot always keep up to write down the notes. Also, the process of notetaking causes students to not pay attention in the class. This is bad for students. However, if students use cellphones to take a picture of notes, that will not be a problem. For example, students can wait for a teacher to finish teaching a lesson, and just use their cellphones to take a picture of the notes on the board. So they do
not need to rush to take notes in the class. Also they will have better notes than with hand writing notes.
Cellphones are a good tool. They can affect student’s studying, grades, and classes. If a student is using the right tool to study, everybody can have an “A” or a “B” grade in the class. Also, teachers do not need to spend a lot of time on one question in class, and students do need to ask teachers to slow down. God will not give you a good grade; the only one way to get a good grade is using the right tool.
Hey Weilong, your blog is wonderful and practical by how you give us your ideas about using cellphone to advance a student's learning process. I think I need to start thinking about cellphone at school now. Thanks
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, but I just want to ask you one question. With those effects of cellphone you showed us, a tablet (like iPad or Galaxy Note) can do the same thing. Why don't we use it?
ReplyDeleteThis is a great question. I was actually wondering the same thing. It almost seems that as cellphones grow bigger and bigger (like the new iphone 6) that the lines between phones and tablets grows blurry.
DeleteI love your support on allowing the usage of cellphone. I agree to it wholeheartedly how cellphone can help us students, but how many student can be trusted with this privilege?
